The New Jersey Devils announced today (June 30) that the team has acquired defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. New Jersey will transfer the best of any of the 2026 three fourth-round picks New Jersey currently owns (Dallas’ 4th in 2026, Winnipeg’s 4th in 2026, or New Jersey’s own 4th in 2026) to Montreal once the final draft order has been established for the 2026 NHL Draft.
Devils’ Needs Can Be Addressed in Free Agency
June 30, 2024 by Josh Reinitz
New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald was one of the lucky ones. When he settled into his seat on the plane to leave Las Vegas, he had significantly more money to spend than when he landed just four days earlier. Armed with nearly $20 million in cap space, he now heads home to finish remaking his team in the image of a modern Stanley Cup champion.

Devils’ Dealmaking Will Be Limited By Palat’s Contract
June 28, 2024 by Erica Rosenbaum
The 2023-24 season served as an eye-opening experience for the New Jersey Devils. Despite breaking the franchise record for most wins and most points in the 2022-23 season, the team took a massive step back and missed the playoffs only a year later. Now, as the dreadful 2023-24 season comes to a close with the Florida Panthers being crowned champions, hockey minds shift to the endless possibilities of improving their team’s roster. For the Devils, acquiring Jacob Markstrom was the most important addition they will make this offseason. Now, they will look to add depth on offense and defense. However, general manager Tom Fitzgerald will need to be careful with the contracts that he hands out.
