3 Forwards the Devils Should Reunite With
June 21, 2024 by Daniel Ivan
The New Jersey Devils have a lot of work to do this offseason. A disappointing season that didn’t meet expectations calls for adjustments and upgrades. One place to start is free agency. New Jersey has over $19 million in cap space to work with, and Dawson Mercer is the only high-profile player that needs a new contract. General manager Tom Fitzgerald has already vocalized that he’s looking to add pretty much everywhere to his lineup, which could mean a reunion with some former Devils.

New Jersey Devils’ 2024 NHL Free Agency Guide

The Devils were many pundits’ dark-horse favorite to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season. Then disaster struck. Everything that could have gone wrong for New Jersey did. A disastrous mix of injuries, performance regression, and substandard play in goal combined to cost the team a chance even to make the postseason and Lindy Ruff his job.

Things are suddenly looking up for ex-Toronto Maple Leafs and new New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe. After the Maple Leafs’ round-one playoff loss to the Boston Bruins, Keefe was let go by the Maple Leafs. However, it didn’t take him long to turn the page to a new chapter by joining the Devils as their new head coach.

On June 19, the New Jersey Devils made the first massive trade of the 2024 offseason. They acquired 34-year-old stud goaltender Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames for defenseman Kevin Bahl and a 2025 first-round pick (top-10 protected). With 31.25 percent retention on Markstrom’s contract by the Flames, his cap hit is just $4.125 million for the Devils.
