Today in Hockey History: June 14
This is one of the most memorable dates ever on Broadway, and it has nothing to do with a musical. Hockey fans in the Big Apple waited 54 seasons for the moment that happened back on this date in 1994. Also, the National Hockey League officially expanded into the Sunshine State. Let’s hop aboard the THW time machine and take a journey back to relive all the best June 14 has to offer.
Sid the Kid vs. Super Mario: Crosby Still Falls Short
Sidney Crosby just finished his 17th season as captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins and played some of the best hockey of his career. At 36 years old, he is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. This season, he played in 82 games and scored 42 goals with 52 assists for a total of 94 points. There is no denying his talent, but does he belong in the same conversation as Penguins’ great Mario Lemieux?
NHL’s Top 5 All-Time Indigenous Players
The NHL has had 7,623 players suit up since it first started in 1917. Of those 7,000-plus players, only about 80 have been of Indigenous heritage, which makes up only 1.5 percent of the players in the NHL (From Recasting the History of Pro Hockey’s Indigenous Players, New York Times, June 25, 2018).

Today in Hockey History: June 13
This date in National Hockey League history has seen a lot of memorable moments throughout the decades. The greatest coach in the history of the game went out in style, the youngest first-overall pick was made, and the Hockey Hall of Fame welcomed in a whole slew of new names. Let’s begin our daily trip back in time to relive all the best moments June 13 has given us.
Oldest Players with 100-Point Seasons
It is difficult to score in the NHL. Not exactly breaking news. That’s why only nine players, including Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Artemi Panarin, David Pastrnak, and J.T. Miller, reached the 100-point mark in 2023-24. That doesn’t seem like many players, and it’s not compared to the 1981-82 season when 13 reached the century mark.
The Red Wings Should Retire Henrik Zetterberg’s Number
The Detroit Red Wings are incredibly stingy when it comes to retiring numbers. To date, they have only retired eight jerseys with the recent inclusion of Red Kelly’s number 4. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing — retiring a jersey is an honor reserved for the greatest of the greats in team history.
