Grading the Coyotes’ 2023 Offseason Acquisitions
December 3 2023, 2023 Cooper Krigbaum
The Arizona Coyotes entered the 2023 offseason with much more questions than answers. Will they be busy throughout free agency? Will Logan Cooley return to the University of Minnesota or make his highly anticipated NHL debut? These were just a few questions brought up at the start of free agency, and now that we’re a quarter through the season, these questions are slowly being answered. The 2023-24 campaign has seen a glut of ups and downs for the Coyotes, but the newcomers are adding elements that are leading to wins, which were previously not there last season. That said, here are the early season grades for the 2023 offseason acquisitions.
The Coyotes entered free agency with a bang, signing Jason Zucker to a one-year, $5.3 million deal. It was a bit unexpected since nobody knew how busy general manager Bill Armstrong would be. The season prior, Zucker played alongside Sidney Crosby with the Pittsburgh Penguins, putting up respectable numbers despite being injured from time to time. So far this season, he hasn’t seen much offensive numbers, but he’s playing a significant role in shepherding Cooley into the league.
Coyotes’ Maccelli Quickly Becoming a Force at the Age of 23
December 6 2023, 2023 Richard Jelinek
Arizona Coyotes forward Matias Maccelli is in year three of his NHL career, but he is making a statement on the ice. The statement is that he can lead this team without wearing a letter on his jersey and be a dominating force. He is only 23 years old, plays like a seasoned veteran, and is doing so in a quiet fashion.
Maccelli began his junior career in the Finnish Liiga, playing for HC Turun Palloseura (TPS). He joined the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2017 and posted 39 goals and 54 assists for 93 points in 98 games. In year two of playing in the USHL, he was named to the ALL_USHL Second Team. However, in 2019, he returned to Finland to join Llves of Liiga.
Coyotes Arena Update Answers Multitude of Questions
December 6 2023, 2023 Cooper Krigbaum
The Arizona Coyotes are in the final stages of finding a permanent home in the desert, which would solve a multitude of nuisances. Per PHNX Sports, Craig Morgan writes, “Coyotes president and CEO Xavier Gutierrez told PHNX Sports on Tuesday that the team expects to announce its chosen arena site by the end of the calendar year, or shortly thereafter.” Since original owner Richard Burke determined that the team could not survive in the desert, finding a permanent home has been a battle.
From arena to arena or city to city, it’s been a never-ending resolution. Nevertheless, with this potential site climbing the rankings, this may be Alex Mereulo’s group’s biggest task yet, as it’s never been done before. If this doesn’t work out, it could be game over for the Coyotes in Arizona. Solving this hurdle would bring sustainability and assurance to the Coyotes players and fanbase that have dealt with a myriad of rumors for nearly two decades. While there is still much unknown, we know some details about what could be the next home of the Coyotes.
