Canucks’ 3 Up, 3 Down: Joshua, Demko, Power Play & More
February 18, 2024 by Matthew Zator
With only three regulation losses so far in 2024, the Vancouver Canucks are a steam engine that seemingly cannot be stopped. They have built up a four-point cushion on first place in the NHL and what was a tight race at the top of the Pacific Division with the Vegas Golden Knights is now a 12-point spread with the Canucks at 80 points and the Golden Knights at 68.
With all that said, let’s to this edition of Canucks’ 3 Up, 3 Down, which features a certain goaltender climbing the all-time wins list, a hometown boy possibly making his NHL debut, an unfortunate injury to Dakota Joshua, and more.
3 Moves Canucks Should Make Before the 2024 Trade Deadline
February 15, 2024 by Matthew Zator
The Vancouver Canucks got ahead of the game by adding Elias Lindholm over a month before the trade deadline, but apparently aren’t done making moves. President of hockey operations Jim Rutherford and general manager Patrik Allvin are still in the market for a defenceman to bolster their depth and are closing in on signing Phil Kessel who is a free agent right now. While it appears they are done with the blockbuster trades, the weeks leading up to the deadline could still be interesting to follow for Canucks fans. With that said, here are three moves (not necessarily trades) that they should make before March 8.
What Could Phil Kessel Bring to the Vancouver Canucks?
February 17, 2024 by The Old Prof
Phil Kessel might not look like a hockey player, but he’s been one of the best over the past 17 seasons. The dynamic right winger born in Madison, Wisconsin has left a mark on the NHL throughout his illustrious career. Standing 5-feet-11 and weighing 208 pounds, Kessel’s stature doesn’t give anyone a sense of his scoring talent on the ice.
However, when looking at his career, if he still has the desire and the skill, he could bring the ability to score a timely goal in a tough spot. He’s been through the playoff wars and not only survived but he’s prospered. He’s battle-hardened and teams he’s played for have won three Stanley Cups in his 17 seasons. The question here is whether he might be able to help the Vancouver Canucks win one this season.
Alexander Mogilny Is Hockey Hall Of Fame Worthy
The fact that Alexander Mogilny has not received enshrinement in the Hockey Hall of Fame is more than a bit perplexing. The man who was nicknamed “Magic” during his early years in Buffalo assembled perhaps the least considered storied career in the NHL. Fans and hockey historians are beginning to forget how talented he truly was.
While he is certainly not the only noteworthy HHOF snub, what Mogilny did since becoming hockey’s original Cold War defector needs to be given props. In what was reminiscent of a late-night spy movie, he slipped out of Stockholm, Sweden in 1989 at the end of the World Junior tournament and headed to Buffalo alongside Sabres executives.
From there, Mogilny would go on to play 16 seasons in the NHL. Along the way, he compiled numerous achievements that cannot and should not be disregarded. THW takes a look at the key evidence that supports the Hockey Hall of Fame induction of Alexander Mogilny.
