Canadiens Captain Nick Suzuki Is a No. 1 Centre in the NHL

The simple statement in the headline, that Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki is a No. 1 centre in the NHL, was written matter of factly, not to necessarily generate controversy (or page views, although that is the undeniable hope). That this piece will almost just as undeniably elicit strong sentiments on either side of the argument is a reflection of the absurdity of the situation.

There are four ways to acquire an NHL player — the draft, trade, free agency (unrestricted or restricted), and waiver claims. Of those four methods, waiver claims usually provide the least impactful NHL players. A player who is placed on waivers is typically one who is no longer seen as NHL-calibre or is signed to an albatross of a contract.

Canadiens and Evans at Crossroads with 1 Year Left Under Contract

Decimated down the middle in 2023-24, the Montreal Canadiens relied on centre Jake Evans to take on increased responsibility and he responded in kind. If there was any justice in the world, Evans would be rewarded for coming through, but, as it stands, he’s more likely to be an odd man out once the dust settles.
