2024 NHL Free Agency Tracker
NHL free agency starts today. Not only does this look like a strong year for unrestricted free agents, but there are some big-name restricted free agents as well. Because the action moves so quickly, it may be hard to keep track of everything. But don’t worry, we have you covered at The Hockey Writers.
UPDATED AS THE MOVES ARE MADE.
Canadiens Enter Next Stage of RebuildÂ
July 1, 2024 by Blain Potvin
The Montreal Canadiens have had general manager (GM) Kent Hughes at the helm of this rebuilding plan for just over two years. In that time he has worked at accumulating draft picks and other assets that would help towards adding the youth a rebuild relies upon.Â

July 1, 2024 by Karine Hains
It was D-Day today for NHL general managers, they had to decide which pending restricted free agents (RFA) they wanted to keep by issuing them a qualifying offer (QO) and those they wished to cut ties with by simply not issuing a QO. Canadiens Sign Juraj Slafkovsky to an 8-Year Contract Extension
July 2, 2024 by Karine Hains
General manager (GM) Kent Hughes might not have captured the big game he wanted as the free agency market opened yesterday, but he did extend the Montreal Canadiens’ first-overall pick at the 2022 Draft with an eight-year deal. With captain Nick Suzuki signed through the end of the 2029-30 season, sniper Cole Caufield signed through the end of the 2030-31 campaign and now hulking winger Juraj Slafkovsky signed through the end of 2032-33, the general manager has now put the real foundation of his team down. Here are my thoughts on the deal and Hughes’ comments about it.
