Flames Should Be Wary of Necas Acquisition
May 22, 2024 by Derek Olsen
The conference finals are nearly underway, and thus the NHL is one step closer to crowning this year’s champion. While most Canadian hockey fans tuned in to the “Battle of Canada” between the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers, fans of the other seven Canadian franchises can do nothing but look forward to next season. The Calgary Flames have been sitting idle since early April, after being eliminated from postseason contention for the second consecutive season. The team is in a transitional period and traded away Tyler Toffoli, Nikita Zadorov, Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, and Noah Hanifin in 2023-24. They now have nine picks in the upcoming 2024 NHL Entry Draft, which will serve as the first test of the offseason.

We’re in the middle of summer, and not much is happening in the world of hockey. The Calgary Flames have had a quiet offseason thus far and look to be mostly content with their current group of players going into 2023-24. The 2023 NHL Entry Draft has also come and gone with the Flames selecting Samuel Honzek 16th overall, among others. The draft is, of course, one of the strongest ways a team can build success in addition to trades and signings. The Flames are surely hoping that this class coupled with the last few will help them achieve future team progress.

With the Vancouver Canucks’ exit last night, we now have our four teams set for the conference finals in the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, and the New York Rangers. Seeing these four as the last teams standing doesn’t come as a major surprise, as they were all considered strong contenders entering the 2023-24 season.

The NHL Playoffs are into Round 2 and are providing hockey fans with a plethora of dramatic moments to be etched into the history of the game forever. What is much less exciting is being a fan of a team on the outside looking in, sitting idly by until the fall comes. For those enamoured with the Calgary Flames, that is a long wait. The team was eliminated from playoff contention in early April and now haven’t partaken in any postseason play for two consecutive seasons. Currently, the focus is on the offseason; general manager Craig Conroy has a big draft ahead of him and will likely be looking for trades and free agent signings to bolster his roster.
