Blackhawks Have Decisions to Make with Crowded Forward Group

The Chicago Blackhawks will be headed into the 2024-25 season a much different team than they were last season. They elected not to re-sign numerous players whose contracts were up at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, while adding eight new faces via trade and free agency, including five forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender. The cumulative effect is a much-improved team, on paper at least, as the organization attempts to take the next step in their rebuild.

When the Chicago Blackhawks made their free agent frenzy signings on July 1, goaltending was the one position that unsurprisingly got a big upgrade. General manager Kyle Davidson said at the end of the season that he would “take a deep look” at the position, considering backup goaltender Arvid Söderblom‘s struggles. Now, they have a replacement while he finds his game again in Rockford: Laurent Brossoit, who was signed to a two-year deal ($3.3 million AAV).

At 39 years old, Dustin Byfuglien was an NHL defenseman for well over a decade. He has played for the Winnipeg Jets, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Atlanta Thrashers (who became the Jets). It’s hard to overlook the significance of his presence given his size, grit, and skill.
