Assessing the Flyers’ Future at the All-Star Break
January 29, 2024 by Justin Giampietro
The All-Star Break is finally upon us, and it’s a good time to take a step back and look at the big picture for the Philadelphia Flyers. While they are riding a five-game losing streak — all losses being in regulation — they have a 25-19-6 record that gives them a four-point advantage in third place in the Metropolitan Division. The month of January has been one of the craziest in franchise history, and it has completely altered the future of the team. What does it look like now?
Flyers Flash: Needing of a Reset
January 29, 2024 by Justin Giampietro (Premium THW Flyers Substack Content)
In this week’s edition of Flyers Flash, we go into depth about the Philadelphia Flyers’ 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning where Nikita Kucherov was the story, their 3-0 shutout loss to Alex Lyon and the Detroit Red Wings, and how a solid effort completely vanished in the first period in a 6-2 loss to David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins.
Also, we look at their seemingly dwindling playoff chances with a tough schedule ahead and why the necessity of star talent was made apparent time and time again. With the All-Star Break now upon us, what does that mean for Philadelphia?
Revisiting the Flyers' 2019 Stadium Series Win vs. Penguins
January 27, 2024 by Justin Giampietro (Premium THW Flyers Substack Content)
With the Philadelphia Flyers’ Stadium Series matchup with the New Jersey Devils set to take place at MetLife Stadium on Feb. 17, it’s a good time to revisit the Flyers’ most recent — and only — win outdoors. Facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins on a rainy evening in Philadelphia for their Stadium Series matchup, the Orange and Black capped off a thrilling comeback against their in-state rivals on Feb. 23, 2019.
The home-squad Flyers, 28-26-7, were in the process of bouncing back from an abysmal start to the season that saw them fall to as low a record as 15-22-6. This led to the firing of both head coach Dave Hakstol and general manager (GM) Ron Hextall.
As for the Penguins, they had a 32-22-7 record and were looking to lock themselves in not just a playoff spot, but first place in the Metropolitan Division — they were tied for third place, four points behind the Washington Capitals and six behind the New York Islanders entering the game. Needing a statement win to try and put themselves in the race for the division, Philadelphia wasn’t planning on making it easy for them.
Some Outdoor History for Philadelphia
Looking at the Flyers’ history outdoors, it was not pretty entering this game. They lost their first contest by a 2-1 final in overtime on Jan. 1, 2010, in a Winter Classic showdown hosted by the Boston Bruins. With a 1-0 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the third period, the Flyers let that one slip away and it began some of their demons.
Flyers & Ryan Poehling Agree on 2-Year Extension
January 26, 2024 by Justin Giampietro
On the same day as their eight-year extension of winger Owen Tippett, general manager (GM) Daniel Briere and the Philadelphia Flyers locked up forward Ryan Poehling to a two-year contract worth $1.9 million per season. Freshly off turning 25 years of age at the time of the deal, he’s still a fairly young player who has found a niche in Philadelphia.
Flyers’ Owen Tippett Signs 8-Year Extension
January 26, 2024 by Justin Giampietro
The Philadelphia Flyers extended forward Owen Tippett to a massive eight-year deal on Jan. 26 worth $49.6 million in total value for a cap hit of $6.2 million each season. Less than a month shy of being 25 years of age at the time of signing, this long-term move is set to keep him in Philadelphia through his early 30s.
