The Edmonton Oilers’ incredible postseason run came up just short of the ultimate goal on Monday (June 24) at Amerant Bank Arena, where they lost 2-1 to the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. After the Oilers won three consecutive games to rally from a 3-0 series deficit and force a seventh game, the Panthers were finally able to capture the franchise’s first championship with a victory before 19,939 fans in Sunrise.

Connor McDavid, the Edmonton Oilers’ star forward, won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, having accumulated an impressive 42 points (eight goals, 34 assists) in 25 games. However, in a move that has sparked considerable debate, McDavid chose not to come out to accept the prestigious award after the Oilers’ heartbreaking Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers.

Connor McDavid had already set a playoff record with 34 assists this postseason, and his 42 points rank fourth best, trailing only two playoff runs by Wayne Gretzky (47 points in 1986 and 43 in 1988) and one by Mario Lemieux (44 in 1991).
He became the first player ever to post back-to-back games of at least four points in the Stanley Cup Final to help Edmonton rally from 3-0 down to win Games 4 and 5.

Panthers Win Game 7 vs. Oilers to Capture Franchise’s First Stanley Cup

The Florida Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 to win Game 7 and the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in franchise history.
Carter Verhaeghe tied a franchise record with his 11th goal of the postseason to open the scoring in Game 7. Teams that score first in Game 7 of a Stanley Cup Final own an all-time record of 12-5, including eight straight wins dating back to the 1994 Final.
