We rank all 32 NHL teams into 5 Stanley Cup contender tiers for 2026-27, from Final Four Favorites to playoff bubble and rebuild projects. Where does your team fit in?
The month of August signals “the midpoint” of the NHL offseason. It serves as about a month past the NHL Draft and free agency while also indicating that training camps will open in a little more than a month from now.
While there are some juicy storylines that still need to work themselves out, the situation in Detroit for example, August serves as the time when you can start getting a feel for who the contenders are for the Stanley Cup going into the new season. That’s what we’re going to try to do here.
We are going to put all 32 NHL teams into tiers evaluating their contention status. While everyone gets a fresh start with the new season, only a handful of teams have a realistic chance of hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup at the end of the season.
Today’s NHL makes it really hard to acquire game-changing talent in one offseason. While you will see teams able to add impact players, the most elite players generally don’t change teams. As you will see in our tiers, those teams with the most elite talent find themselves near the top.
Explaining Our Tier Structure
For this exercise, we are going to slot teams into five different tiers based on their current team and perceived overall chances of winning the Stanley Cup. What makes this list different is that each tier has a cap of the number of teams that can be included in them.
Tier 1: Teams with the best chance to win the Stanley Cup. (4 teams included, 2 from each conference.)
Tier 2: Teams projected to win at least one round in the playoffs. (4 teams included, 2 from each conference)
Tier 3: Teams projected to make the playoffs and could either lose in the first round based on matchup or win multiple rounds based on circumstances. (8 teams included.)
Tier 4: Teams on the playoff bubble that will hover around the cutoff all season. (8 teams included.)
Tier 5: There’s always next year. Teams that are building towards the future but either have a long rebuild ahead or aren’t ready for any of the other tiers. (8 teams included.)
A couple of notes before we reveal our tiers. First, teams are always one key injury or performance away from going up or down a tier. This list is meant to give you an idea of where we think a particular team is. There are always surprises and disappointments that come up.
Then second, we capped the first two tiers at eight teams primarily to try and predict who the final eight could be considering how divisional play would shake out. In other words, anyone from Tier 3 or even Tier 4 if they make it could shake things up.
With that in mind, it’s time to unveil our Stanley Cup contender tiers for the 2026-27 season.
Tier 1: True Stanley Cup Contenders/Projected Final 4
Teams: Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers.
Analysis: The Hurricanes are the defending Stanley Cup champions and have their core coming back for more. There’s no reason to think a major drop off is coming. Their biggest challenge will come from teams ready to try to dethrone them.
