2024 NHL Draft: Which Playoff Surges Will Lead to a Jump in Rankings?

With just two games left in the Memorial Cup tournament, every major junior league has finished its postseason and crowned its new champions. As for the prospects up for the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, that means that there isn’t any time left to impact their rankings.
Yet, for a select few, they showed off their skills until the very last minute and squeezed every last moment for a chance to improve where they fall on draft day. Of course, some succeeded at that much more than others, so here are eight names to watch for at the draft who could jump up above their projections.
Raoul Boilard – 2024 NHL Draft Prospect Profile

Raoul Boilard broke onto the draft scene at the 2024 Kubota Top Prospects Game, where he came up big with a three-point performance, including two goals, and was named the Player of the Game for Team Red en route to a 3-1 victory. He wasn’t expected to be the biggest performer on the team – that honor went to the likes of Sam Dickinson, Andrew Basha, Adam Jecho, or Zayne Parekh – but Boilard asserted himself as one of the complete centers heading into the 2024 NHL Draft.
Leo Sahlin Wallenius – 2024 NHL Draft Prospect Profile

While most of the top names in the draft regarding defensemen hail from North America and Russia, a couple of intriguing Swedes bear a closer look. One is Alfons Freij, and the other is Leo Sahlin Wallenius. Spending his entire season in the J20 Nationell with the Vaxjo Lakers, he lit up the league with 11 goals and 42 points. He also dominated the international circuit with seven goals and 23 points over the various tournaments. Simply put, he knows how to produce from the blue line.

Jack Van Volsen – 2024 NHL Draft Prospect Profile

Jack Van Volsen’s struggles in the Ontario Hockey League have been unfortunate to see after the high hopes he had heading into his junior career. He was a highly sought-after prospect heading into the 2022 OHL Priority Selection after scoring 110 points in 57 games for an incredibly strong Toronto Jr. Canadiens team. He dominated the U-16 age group with the Jr. Canadiens on a team that included a future first-round pick in this year’s draft Michael Hage and a future first-round pick in next year’s draft Porter Martone.Â
2024 NHL Draft’s Top 10 American Prospects

The 2023 NHL Draft class saw two Americans go in the top 10 and ten in the top 50. Looking back, it was the strongest draft class for Americans since 2019 where stars Jack Hughes, Cole Caufield, Trevor Zegras, Matt Boldy, and others were drafted. However, the 2024 class appears to be on the weaker side of recent history, but it will be interesting to see how it compares in the future.
