Carolina Hurricanes’ 2024 NHL Entry Draft Recap

The 2024 NHL Entry Draft has come and gone. Over the two-day event from June 28-29 at The Sphere in Las Vegas, 225 players from around the world heard their names get called on the NHL’s biggest stage. They know where their rights will be held over the next few seasons, and the teams who drafted them are stockpiling the prospect cupboards, hoping some, if not all, of their selections are home runs. The Carolina Hurricanes had 10 picks over the event, all on Day 2 after trading their 27th overall pick to the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night (June 28). General Manager Eric Tulsky and his staff kept themselves busy by trading back a few times during the draft to collect picks throughout the day.
Martin’s Musings: Hurricanes Qualifying Offers & Free Agency Rumors

As the calendar turns to July 1, we are officially in the NHL schedule’s free agent and re-sign phase. When the clock hits noon Eastern, there will be a flood of reports of players either getting extensions with their current teams or we will see some fresh faces in new places. Before that kicks off, Sunday, June 30 had the qualifying offers (QO) deadline at 5 p.m. Eastern when teams had to give their restricted free agents (RFA) their QO or they would become unrestricted free agents (UFA). Regarding the Carolina Hurricanes, they were once again in the middle of the rumor mill with the Jake Guentzel situation of whether or not they were going to re-sign him. Furthermore, they made decisions on their RFAs before the afternoon deadline on Sunday. Carolina Hurricanes Sign Sean Walker to 5-Year Deal

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed right-handed defenseman Sean Walker to a five-year contract worth $3.6 million each season. Considering his upside, this actually seems like a possible steal of a deal if the 29-year-old defender can play to his potential.
Hurricanes Navigate Chaotic Day 1 of Free Agency 2024

We are officially in July and the first day of free agency did not disappoint in the NHL. As the dust settled, 183 players were signed with a combined 389 contract years. Furthermore, the total cap hit reached $358.196 million, with total contract dollars hitting $1.205 billion. It’s safe to say the teams spent money and the players were getting paid handsomely. Regarding the Carolina Hurricanes, they had a busy July 1 with a slew of departures and new arrivals for the upcoming 2024-25 season. From fan favorites leaving, some staying for multiple seasons, to fresh new faces, this will be a different Hurricanes team compared to the 2023-24 group.
