Worst Trades in Red Wings History
June 24, 2024 by Tony Wolak
As the Detroit Red Wings continue to rebuild, thoughts of missed opportunities, unnecessarily long contracts, and poor trades often come to mind. And with former general manager Ken Holland leading the charge, many had an uneasy feeling about the future.
If you were concerned about Holland’s ability to execute the franchise-improving swaps, don’t fret. There have been some ugly trades in Red Wings history and Holland was only responsible for one of them. Let’s take a look at the worst trades of the past 97 years and hope today’s Red Wings don’t join the list.
Predators & Red Wings Trade 2023 Draft Prospects
June 25, 2024 by Michael Ostrower
The Nashville Predators have acquired Andrew Gibson from the Detroit Red Wings for Jesse Kiiskinen and the 53rd pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Gibson, the 42nd pick of the 2023 Draft by the Red Wings, had 12 goals, 44 points in 68 games last season with the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League. Kiiskinen, the 68th pick of the 2023 Draft by the Predators, had four goals, 10 points in 38 games with the Lahti Pelicans of Liiga.
This trade is as a bit of a strange one in the hockey world, as both Gibson and Kiiskinen were drafted just one year ago. It is unusual to see prospects get traded so fast after being drafted, let alone in a swap. This trade does make sense, though, as the two sides have worked together five times in the past two seasons.

Red Wings 2024 Draft Guide: Top 50 Targets, Trades & More
June 26, 2024 by Tony Wolak
The Detroit Red Wings have been diligently preparing for the 2024 NHL Draft over the past several months. And on Friday, Steve Yzerman, Kris Draper, and the team’s scouting staff will have another chance to strengthen the organization’s prospect pipeline.
Detroit enters the 2024 draft with eight picks, including:
No. 15
No. 47
No. 80
No. 126
No. 144
No. 176
No. 203
No. 208
There are two main themes for this year’s draft. First, the Red Wings have the opportunity to swing for upside. They’re well-stocked with two-way, responsible players and are positioned to choose dynamic players who need coaching to refine other areas of their game.

Red Wings Should Kick Tires on Trade for Rutger McGroarty
June 26, 2024 by Evan Sabourin
The Philadelphia Flyers found themselves in a very difficult position this season when it was reported that Cutter Gauthier – the fifth overall pick from the 2022 NHL Draft – had no intention of signing with the organization. Philadelphia then traded the forward to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a 2025 second-round draft pick. Flyers general manager Danny Briere told reporters that the trade “was a long time coming.” Briere said when the team drafted Gauthier that the forward told the front office that he was “built to be a Flyer and wanted to be a Flyer” before ultimately changing his mind. If the reports out there are true, the Winnipeg Jets may be facing a similar situation with forward Rutger McGroarty, the team’s first-round selection (14th overall) from the 2022 Draft.
